Closed Preserve

Named for the Garaventa family, as was their request to Hal Porter Homes, the developer of the surrounding land. Domingo Garaventa came to this country in the 1890s and bought the first of three parcels north of what became Interstate 580. Eventually the family owned one-third of "Township 2 South Range 2 East," as well as 85 acres on the west side of what became Vasco Road. The vast Contra Costa County Garaventa holdings are owned by cousins. The family farmed wheat, barley and oats on the land until the 1940s when they moved elsewhere. His grandson, Alwin, of Oakland, and Alwin's sister, Valeta, of Richmond, sold the land in 1995.
