Livermore PD Tip of the Month: Pedestrian Safety Awareness
September is Pedestrian Safety Month in California, and the Livermore Police Department is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert to protect pedestrians on our roads.
Stay Vigilant to Protect Pedestrians
The Livermore Police Department reminds drivers that by taking extra precautions, they can help reduce the risk of crashes and injuries involving pedestrians. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot, safety should be a priority for everyone sharing the road.
Safe Driving Tips for Drivers
- Slow Down: Do not speed, especially at intersections. Always be prepared to stop for pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Avoid Blocking Crosswalks: When waiting to make a right-hand turn, ensure that you’re not obstructing pedestrian pathways.
- Never Drive Impaired: Driving under the influence significantly increases the risk of accidents and endangers both drivers and pedestrians.
Safe Walking Tips for Pedestrians
- Be Predictable: Use signalized crosswalks where drivers expect pedestrian traffic.
- Stay Alert: Watch for approaching vehicles and exercise caution when crossing the street. Remember, at 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
- Enhance Visibility at Night: Make it easier for drivers to see you by wearing bright colors, reflective material, or using a flashlight.
- Exercise Caution on Busy Roads: Be especially careful crossing streets at night or in areas with higher speed limits.
The Livermore Police Department also encourages everyone to stay off their phones while driving or walking to prevent distractions that could lead to accidents. Let's work together to ensure our roads are safe for everyone this September.
