Livermore PD Tip of the Month: Preventing License Plate Theft

🚔 Attention Livermore Residents, Commuters, and Visitors! 🚗

We're committed to keeping our community safe, and one way to do that is by preventing license plate theft from your vehicles.

People engaged in criminal activity will sometimes take license plates from cars belonging to law-abiding citizens in the community to place them on the vehicles they use when committing crimes, go undetected, or mislead law enforcement.

To prevent this from occurring and to help ensure that your license plates aren't taken and used in crimes, here are some essential tips to safeguard your plates:

Use Anti-Theft Screws

Invest in anti-theft screws for your license plates. These specialized screws require unique tools for removal, making it much harder for thieves to steal your plates.

Park in Well-Lit Areas

Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas with high foot traffic. Thieves are less likely to attempt theft in places where they can be easily seen.

Utilize Surveillance

Choose parking spots within the security cameras' view or in busy areas monitored by law enforcement. This can deter thieves and aid in identifying suspects if theft occurs.

Check Regularly for Missing Plates

Make it a habit to check your license plates regularly, especially after leaving your vehicle parked for extended periods. Quick inspections can help you detect any tampering or attempted theft.

Report Suspected Activity

If you notice anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles or attempting to tamper with license plates, don't hesitate to report it to local authorities immediately.

Report Theft

If you notice that your license plates have been taken, please contact LPD at 925-371-4987 immediately to report them stolen.

By taking these precautions, you can proactively reduce the risk of license plate theft and help maintain our community's safety and security.

🚗Let's work together to protect your vehicles and our community!
