Helping Police After a Crime Occurs

Community members can play an important role in helping police investigate crimes and identify those involved. If you learn about a crime or suspicious incident in your neighborhood, here are a few proactive steps you can take:

  • Check your cameras. If you have home security cameras, doorbell cameras, or vehicle cameras, review your footage around the time of the incident. If you see anything that may be helpful, contact the police department.

  • Let police know if you have cameras nearby. Even if you are not sure your cameras captured the incident, footage from the area may help investigators understand what happened before or after the crime.

  • Register your cameras here. Camera registration helps police know who may have video in a specific area during an investigation. It does not give police direct access to your cameras.

  • Use quality cameras when possible. Cameras that provide clear images, capture license plates when feasible, and store footage for a reasonable period of time can be especially helpful.

  • Improve lighting around your home. Good exterior lighting, especially near driveways, walkways, garages, and front doors, can deter crime and improve the quality of video footage.
    the
  • Report suspicious activity. If you see suspicious vehicles, people, or activity in your neighborhood, call police and report it. Be ready to share specific details such as location, direction of travel, vehicle description, license plate if safely visible, clothing description, and what made the activity concerning.

If there is an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911. For non-emergency reports or information that may help an investigation, contact Livermore Police through the non-emergency line at (925) 371-4987.
