Romance and Online Scams: What to Know

Romance and online scams are among the most common — and costly — types of fraud reported to law enforcement. These scams often begin on dating apps, social media platforms, or through email and text messages, where scammers create fake relationships to gain trust over time.

Scammers may claim to be working overseas, serving in the military, or dealing with a sudden personal emergency. Once trust is established, they often ask for money, citing reasons such as travel costs, medical expenses, or investment opportunities. Requests for payment may come in the form of gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency — methods that are difficult to trace or recover.

Watch for Red Flags

Be cautious if someone you’ve met online:

  • Avoids meeting in person or participating in video calls
  • Asks for money or financial assistance
  • Pressures you to act quickly or insists on keeping the situation secret

Protect Yourself

To reduce your risk:

  • Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person
  • Limit the personal information you share online
  • Verify requests using official contact information
  • Trust your instincts — if something feels suspicious, talk with a trusted friend or family member

If you believe you’ve been targeted by a romance or online scam, stop all communication immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.
